Hurricane Season Is Coming: How to Prepare Now (Before It’s Too Late)

May 8, 2025
Hurricane over Florida

If a hurricane struck next week, would you be ready?

This year’s hurricane season is expected to bring 19 named storms, 9 hurricanes, and 4 major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher), numbers that exceed the 30-year average and signal an active season ahead. National Hurricane Preparedness Week is the perfect time to take action before the next storm is on your doorstep.

Use these practical tips to protect your property and loved ones – before, during, and after a hurricane.

Before Hurricane Season

  • Strengthen Windows & Doors
Install storm shutters or impact-resistant windows. If that’s not an option, pre-cut 5/8-inch exterior-grade plywood to fit your windows and store it with anchors or bolts for quick installation. Reinforce garage doors and ensure entry doors have at least three hinges and a deadbolt with a 1-inch throw.
  • Secure the Roof
Inspect for loose shingles or tiles and repair them promptly. Consider hurricane straps or clips to secure your roof to the walls more tightly – consult a professional for best results.
  • Trim Trees & Check Drainage
Cut back weak or overhanging branches and ensure your gutters, downspouts, and storm drains are clear to help prevent water buildup.
  • Review Insurance
Confirm your homeowners’ policy covers wind damage. Note that flood damage usually requires separate flood insurance – get it early, as it often has a 30-day waiting period.

When a Hurricane Is Forecasted

  • Document Your Property
Take clean photos or videos of your property’s interior and exterior, including valuable items, to create a visual record for insurance purposes. Store the images and videos in a safe, accessible location – ideally back up digitally – in case you need to file an insurance claim after the storm.
  • Secure Outdoor Items
Bring inside any objects that could turn into projectiles during high winds, such as patio furniture, grills, potted plants, tools, and trash cans. Larger items like sheds or playsets that can’t be moved should be securely anchored.
  • Prepare for Flooding
Move valuables, electronics, and furniture to higher floors or elevate them on blocks to reduce the risk of water damage. Use sandbags or flood barriers around doors and other low entry points if you live in a flood-prone area. If you’re evacuating and flooding is imminent, shut off electricity at the main breaker.
  • Shut Off Utilities if Needed
Familiarize yourself with how to safety turn off gas, water, and electricity, and only do so if directed by authorities or if flooding is expected. Fill bathtubs and other containers with water for sanitation purposes in case water service is interrupted.
  • Reinforce the Property
Secure boats or trailers by tying them down. Park your vehicles in a garage if possible, or at least away from trees and power lines to reduce the chance of damage from falling debris.
  • Make a Plan
Plan ahead for evacuation by identifying where you’ll go and mapping out multiple routes in case roads are blocked. Make arrangements for pets by finding pet-friendly shelters or lodging options. Establish a communication plan with family or friends, including choosing an out-of-area contact to help everyone stay connected if local networks are down.
  • Build an Emergency Kit
Build a comprehensive emergency kit to ensure your household is prepared. Stock at least one gallon of water per person per day and on-perishable food to last 3-7 days. Include a week’s supply of any essential medications and necessary medical equipment. Don’t forgot flashlights, extra batteries, and a battery-powered or hand-crank radio to stay informed if power is lost. Pack a first-aid kit, hygiene products, extra clothing, and important documents sealed in waterproof bags. Tools like a multi-tool, duct tape, and tarps can also be invaluable for emergency repairs or shelter needs.

During the Hurricane

  • Stay Away from Windows
Even with protection, avoid glass areas in case something breaks through.
  • Monitor Leaks
Keep buckets or tarps handy for sudden roof or window leaks, but avoid going outside to fix anything during a storm.

After the Hurricane

  • Inspect Damage Safely
Before re-entering, check for structural issues, downed power lines, or gas leaks. Avoid using open flames until you’re sure it’s safe.
  • Document Everything
Take photos of damage for insurance claims before cleaning up.
  • Dry Out Fast
Remove wet items and use fans or dehumidifiers to prevent mold if flooding occurs.

Pro Tip: Save on Hurricane Supplies
Many states offer Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holidays, letting you buy emergency supplies tax-free. Check your local or state government’s website for dates and qualifying items.
