Most Companies Have Cyber Insurance. Fewer Know What It Actually Covers.

October 21, 2026
Cybersecurity Awareness Month

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, making it a timely opportunity for businesses to consider not only how they’re working to prevent cyberattacks, but how prepared they are to respond if one occurs. A cyber incident can disrupt operations, interrupt revenue and create recovery costs that extend well beyond the initial attack.

Cyber insurance can be an important part of that preparation. But having a policy is only the first step. Understanding what it covers, where limitations may apply and what resources are available can make a meaningful difference when an incident occurs.

82% of surveyed U.S. middle-market executives reported carrying cyber insurance in 2025, but only 69% said they were familiar with their policy coverage.

That gap is significant. Having cyber insurance doesn’t necessarily mean your business understands how its coverage would respond when an incident occurs. Whether you’re considering coverage or already have a policy, understanding what protection you need, what your policy provides and how it aligns with your business’s risks can help you make more informed decisions.

What Does Your Cyber Policy Actually Cover?

Brock Cozad, Commercial Risk Advisor and Cyber Specialist at The Plexus Groupe, works with businesses to evaluate cyber risks and coverage strategies. According to Cozad, coverage has evolved alongside the risks businesses face. Today’s policies may address a broad range of financial risks and provide access to specialized resources that can help businesses respond and recover following an incident.

A common misconception is that cyber insurance primarily pays a ransom if a cybercriminal locks a business’s systems. But a ransom payment may be just the tip of the iceberg. Depending on the policy, broader incident costs can include breach response expenses, legal counsel, crisis communications, data and system recovery, and business interruption. If your business can’t access critical systems, serve customers or generate revenue as usual, those expenses can add up quickly, even beyond a ransom demand.

In addition to financial protection, some policies may include access to specialized expertise such as breach response counsel to help navigate legal and communication considerations, as well as digital forensics professionals who can investigate an incident and assist with recovery.

Understanding the support available before an incident occurs can be just as important as knowing your coverage limits. Businesses should know who to contact, what resources may be available and how their policy is designed to respond before they’re dealing with a cyber event.

Does Your Coverage Reflect Your Business’s Risk?

Understanding what’s included in a policy is only part of the equation. Your coverage also needs to account for the risks your business actually faces.

Cyber incidents have evolved into business interruption events. While the technical impact may originate within your IT environment, the consequences often extend to revenue generation, customer relationships, operational continuity and enterprise value. How much downtime your business could withstand, how dependent it is on technology and outside vendors, and what it would cost to recover should all factor into decisions about coverage and limits. Choosing limits simply because they’re common in your industry may not adequately account for your potential losses.

Your exposure can also change as your business evolves. New technology, vendor relationships, operations and uses of artificial intelligence can introduce risks that weren’t part of an earlier coverage discussion. A manufacturer’s technology dependencies and operational risks, for example, may differ significantly from those of an AI company. Coverage should reflect those differences rather than rely on a one-size-fits-all approach.

Business changes can also affect whether an existing policy still aligns with current exposures. That’s why cyber coverage shouldn’t be treated as a one-time decision. Reviewing it as your technology, operations and vendor network evolve can help identify areas that may warrant a closer look.

“Your cyber insurance should reflect how your business operates, the technology it depends on and the financial impact an incident could have. Effective cyber coverage starts with understanding those exposures and building a strategy that aligns with them.” -Brock Cozad, Commercial Risk Advisor, Cyber Specialist

How Can You Make the Most of Your Cyber Coverage?

Getting value from cyber insurance starts before an incident occurs. Rather than looking only at the premium and overall coverage limit, businesses should consider the potential financial impact of an incident, how the policy may respond and what support may be available.

Whether you’re considering cyber insurance or reviewing your current policy, ask yourself:

  • What cyber events and resulting costs could have the greatest financial impact on our business?
  • What coverage do we have or need, and where could limitations or exclusions apply?
  • What incident response support may be available through our policy, and do we know how to access it?
  • Has our technology, vendor network, operations or other exposure changed since our coverage was last reviewed?

Cyber insurance is ultimately a financial and operational recovery tool. The more your organization understands how coverage, response resources and business exposures intersect, the better prepared you’ll be to navigate an incident when it matters most.
